Resident Evil 6 – Trailers & New Release Date

Resident Evil 6′s release has been brought forward to October 2nd 2012. No plans for a Wii-U launch but is coming to PS3/360/PC.

The game features three playable characters – Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Jake Muller – with Three unique, intertwining stories that the player can choose to play through in any order. While the action takes place in various locations around the world, we do know that a large portion is set in China. If you’re wondering who Jake Muller is, he is a new character, a mercenary in Eastern Europe, and the son of maniacal sunglasses advocate, Albert Wesker. We saw a playthrough of some of Leon’s story, set in Tall Oaks University after a bio-terrorist attack that turns the American President into a zombie, forcing Leon to kill him and subsequently face the blame for his murder (that might sound like a spoiler for the whole plot but this all happened in the first four minutes).
Little things we noticed include the return of proper zombies. These aren’t brainwashed villagers – their skin is falling off, they love hiding behind corners and they make noises like neglected drains. We also noticed that the interface has been streamlined to make things like changing weapons and consuming green herbs easier on the fly. There are also more shooting controls, such as the ability to fire while laying on your back, and some fun contextual attacks. We also learned that Resident Evil 6 features drop-in and drop-out co-op throughout, both locally in split-screen and online.

Mercenaries mode is also making a return and is available from the start meaning it won’t have to be unlocked like previous iterations.

Additional multiplayer options, including new co-op mechanics, are also set to be announced in the future.

Presumably more will be shown and/or announced at E3, gameplay footage seems likely.

The latest trailer [in English]:

Gameplay HUD
The above image is the only gameplay screenshot I have seen. The HUD has had a major work-over it looks like there are potentially different pages (might for trading with co-op partner) but important things to note is being able to quickly switch weapons, dual wielding pistols and a cleaner interface. It seems refined for speed and clarity and shares a reminiscent aesthetic to the likes of Dead Space.

Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection

Originally two Wii exclusives, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles & Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles have been combined into one package ‘Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection’. It is now coming to the PSN this June [also available via a retail box slightly earlier in Japan] You probably have a rough idea of what that means but here’s the breakdown..

What it is:

  1. The wiimote ‘lightgun’ approach has been mapped to the PlayStation Move controller, the gameplay is a classic on the rails shooter much like Time Crisis, House of the Dead and other arcade classics. So expect to point, shoot with the odd Quick Time Event to dodge/run etc.
  2. It’s 4 games in total; Resident Evil 0,1,2,3 & Code Veronica. With extras features like the origin of Leon and Krauser’s hatred towards each other.
  3. Since it’s a Wii port it’s pretty much an identical game with a high resolution pack to make the textures look better and to increase the general resolution. It’s in HD and has trophies [unconfirmed at this point in time as to what they are]

Since Resident Evil has quite a rich backstory this will allow players to learn a bit more about the franchise, particularly before playing the likes of Resident Evil 6 due for release in November 2012. There is no confirmed price at this moment in time but I would expect it to be approximately £25

Spec Ops: The Line

Yesterday the latest trailer for Spec Ops: The Line was released:

The game was first shown in 2009 at the Spike Video Game Awards:

I’ve been looking forward to this game for a while and here are a few reasons why:

  • Third-person shooter with emphasis on squad-based tactics.
  • Dynamic terrain keeps the battleground interesting and adds a fresh dynamic to an increasingly stale genre. [the sandstorms are supposedly random] This can add new paths or potentially close them resulting in players having to think on their feet.
  • It also includes a multiplayer mode which expands the campaign but no specific details as of yet.
  • Co-op

In Spec Ops: The Line you play as Captain America Walker [voiced by Nolan North of course] as he embarks upon a harrowing rescue mission with the rest of Delta Force, having to save and extract the 33rd squad of the US Infantry.

Promising “narrative depth” and “compelling action”, Spec Ops: The Line will hopefully be releasing Spring 2012 if the latest schedule goes to plan (hopefully it will.)

It’s been 6 months since Dubai was wiped off the map by a cataclysmic sandstorm.

Once the world’s most fantastical city, Dubai is now its most opulent ruin. Ravaged by cataclysmic sandstorms, the city lies buried, reclaimed by the desert. Abandoned, it has become a no-man’s-land for refugees and outlaws.

While most people fled the now-barren wasteland, U.S. Army Colonel John Konrad and the 33rd Infantry remained behind to protect those incapable of escape.

Unable to contact anyone in Dubai, the world believed Konrad and his team dead, until they picked up a weak distress signal. As Captain Walker, you and your squad of Delta Operators infiltrate the treacherous region to locate survivors.

There, you and your men will experience madness – A world shattered by the failings of great men. You will face an enemy you were never trained to fight – Fellow soldiers prepared to accept the consequences of their actions. You will walk a line – That razor-thin edge separating your mission from your duty.

There is no escape from Dubai. It is the end – of honor and duty – when the storm has stripped you to the bone and only The Line remains.

The game is built on the Unreal Engine (much like Mass Effect, Batman and a ton others)

For more information and news keep it locked to the PSCrowd or head on over to their official site here: SpecOpsTheLine.

Jak II

The Jak and Daxter franchise set a benchmark for the platformer genre with its huge environments and gaming freedom. In fact, it holds 7 world records in the Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition 2008 including the First Seamless 3D World in a Console Game. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wraith Trailer

The trailer is pure gameplay showing off the updated High Definition graphics.

The facebook page Oddworld Inhabitants also shows the upscaled 3D models used within the game compared to the originals including a polygon count. Also located on the official Just Add Water site.

Stranger’s Wrath follows the adventures of Stranger, a fearsome bounty hunter. Throughout Stranger pursues and captures outlaws in order to collect bounties. The goal is to ultimately earn enough money to pay for a mysterious saving operation. One of the most notable features is the “live ammunition” system, which is literally ammunition made of living creatures like fictional insects and small mammals, each with different uses and effects against enemies.

Originally proposed for an Easter release, pushed back until Summer it looks like Oddworld will coming to the PlayStation Store in Autumn/Fall 2011 [no confirmed date at this point in time]

PlayStation is Looking for a “Few Good Gamers”

15 days ago on the US PlayStation Blog ”Long Live Play” was announced,  ”designed to celebrate gamers from all walks of life and recognize you for making us who we are today.”

Yesterday the US PlayStation Blog made a post which is related to Long Live Play … PlayStation are looking to find some hardcore fans which are ‘good gamers’ on a secretive subject related to LLP. Send them an email at playstationgamer@playstation.sony.com before Tuesday the 20th September, 10AM Pacific Time describing why you’re the ultimate gamer in 30 words or less including a high quality image of yourself and a PS3 controller.

I’m joining you today to announce that we’re looking for a few good gamers to help us with a special assignment related to our new Long Live Play campaign (yes, we are intentionally being Chimera-like stealthy to pique your curiosity). I’m talking die-hard members of our PlayStation Nation from all over who are ready and willing to proudly wave the PlayStation flag for all to see. If you think you’re the ultimate PlayStation gamer, then we want to hear from you!
Send me an email at playstationgamer@playstation.sony.com by 10:00AM PT on Tuesday, 9/20/11 with the following
• 30 words or less (yes we’ll be counting), telling us why you are the ultimate PlayStation gamer.
• Then attach a high-quality picture of you holding your PS3 controller in the environment you love to game in. It could be on your couch, in your man-cave or your desk chair in your dorm room.

I know PlayStation has the best fans out there and I can’t wait to see what you come up with! We’ll report back here shortly with more details…

Final Fantasy X for PSVita & PS3

The news was received during Sony’s Tokyo Game Show [TGS] press conference. Square Enix announced it will be bringing the PS2 blockbuster, Final Fantasy X to both the Vita and it’s PS3 in a remastered make-over. Not much is known on it as of yet but expect it to look good on the Vita and even better on the PS3. Keep it locked onto the crowd for future updates!

Square Enix seems to really enjoy re-releasing their older Final Fantasy games and I’m all for it if people are enjoying the nostalgia. The game was originally released in 2001 for Japan and America and early-mid 2002 internationally. For me it’s main highlight was the graphics and general animation particuarly in the cutscenes, it will be interesting to see how the graphics compare from the original to the PSVita and will be a test of what to expect in it’s future!
